Special Lectures

Special Lectures: "How to write scientific paper?"

The organizing committee has requested to Prof. Dr. Martin Culshaw for a special short course on “How to write scientific paper?” during the conference. We feel very honored that he has agreed on our request. He will deliver max 1 h lecture on the topic followed by Q and A session of 30 min. This course will be conducted during the conference on November 29. The venue hall and time for the course will be announced later.

Prof. Dr. Martin Culshaw - Chief Editor of Bulletin of Engineering Geology and Environment

Official journal of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG)

Special Lectures: "Landslide Hazard and Risk Management - From Slope Analysis to Engineering Practice"

Landslide Hazard and Risk Management - From Slope Analysis to Engineering Practice

The organizing Committee has requested Professor Dr. Robin Chowdhury to present a special lecture /short course on “The role of Slope Analysis in Landslide Hazard and Risk Management”. Professor Chowdhury has agreed to lead a session with presentation duration of about 2 hours including discussion. Active involvement of participants, including question and answer session will be encouraged. Professor Chowdhury will introduce the fundamentals of slope stability and major triggering factors for slope instability such as excessive rainfall and significant earthquakes.  He will focus on the uncertainties in knowledge concerning slopes and how those uncertainties affect assessments based on deterministic analysis. The basis and evolution of probabilistic methods of analysis will then be explained. There is an increasing awareness among professionals as well as academics concerning the role of strain-softening and progressive failure.  Recent research concerning these and other aspects has contributed to the development of improved methods of analysis.

The lecturer will introduce the evolving concepts of hazard, vulnerability and risk in relation to the occurrence and management of landslides. He will share his knowledge and experience concerning evolving trends. He will also focus on the need to distinguish between site-specific methods and regional studies and between qualitative and quantitative assessments of landslide susceptibility and hazard. His lecture will be on November 29.

Prof. Dr. Robin Chowdhury -  EMERITUS PROFESSOR, University of Wollongong, Australia.
