Post-conference excursions

Ex-3: The 2015 Gorkha Earthquake Epicentre area visit (two-day) 

Two-day long excursion is planned to observe earthquake-induced geohazards, damages and recovery in the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake Epicenter area. A total of 25 participants are registered for this excursion. Detail program of the excursion is given below.

Day 1: 01 December 2017

07:00 AM: Depart from Hotel Yak & Yeti (conference venue): participants need to have their breakfast at respective hotel(s) before 07:00 hours.

STOP 1: Kundur, Gorkha

 

Ch. 10.00 km at the Khaireni-Gorkha Road section (Ch. 128.00 km from Kathmandu-Gorkha Highway)

Observation of wide, Daraundi River valley in the north and high hills of Mahabharat range and narrow river gorge in the south.

Observation of wide Daraundi River valley in the north and high hills of the Mahabharat range in the south.

STOP 4, STOP 5:

Dhodeni, Gorkha

 

About 33 km north from Gorkha town (Gorkha- Chhepetar-Arkul-Dhodeni) along a gravel road in Daraundi valley (Alt. ~ 660 m)

Observation of siltation in hydropower dam site, paleo GLOF deposits and earthquake- induced landslides in the mountain slopes

About 15 km up hill drive along a very rough, narrow earthen road (Alt. gain from the previous stop is ~1300 m)

Note:

The arrival and departure time mentioned above subject to change depending on the traffic conditions on the Highway. The times indicated above is applicable only when there is no traffic jam. Sometimes, it could be several hours late. The initial 10:00 km of the last 15:00 km stretch of the road before arriving Barpak is narrow and bumpy. We use jeep (4WD) with capacity to accommodate 7 persons.

As Barpak was completely devastated by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake and reconstruction is yet to be completed, best accommodation is not available in the town and compromise should be made in simple, shared rooms. Hotels in Barpak will serve Nepali foods in the dinner. Early December in this part of Gorkha is usually cold and frosty and excursion participants are suggested to bring warm clothes.

Day 2: 02 December 2017

7:00 - 09:00: Breakfast and free time to enjoy mountain views, tour around the village, and observe reconstruction works.

09:00 - 11:00: Observation of earthquake induced landslides and damages in and around Barpak at few sites. Return trip starts at 11:00 and a Nepali style lunch will be served on the way back in ‘River Side Restaurant’ at Pokhara-Kathmandu Highway around 14:00.

20:00:  Arrival at Hotel Yak and Yeti, Kathmandu*.
